At the end of the day, design has to be realistic and able to be implemented in the world. As much fun as conceptual works are, it remains a fantasy if not carefully thought through. The design process allows for a natural flow through the stages to most efficiently provide creative deliverables that still take into account the limitations of the real world. The Design and Environmental Analysis (DEA) program that I took has a strong emphasis on the diversity of general knowledge, providing background in research methods, statistics and design concepts. In studios, we take our broad background and implement it in the different project design phases. Moving from the pre-design phase, to schematic design, to design development, and finally to construction documents, my work follows the natural workflow of the professional world, ultimately keeping a balance between reality and fantasy.
